My Bloody 800px - Tuesday 15th November 05
What is it with designers wanting wider and wider windows? What does wideness give you exactly. Ok if you have a widescreen laptop then it is ok for you to surf with your browser at a stupid width. Unfortunately some of us have small laptops and we try to preserve our screen space for lots of different applications.
It is a know fact is that men cannot multi task. This stands true except for when using a computer. My brain knows when I use a computer and clicks in to high speed mode. This mode allows me to do everything at once. From listening to music, to chatting on instant messengers even surfing the web. Sometimes it even allows for me to do some work at the same time. This means I want everything to be as small as possible but not any smaller.
This has led me to have my browser at 800px wide. At this width no website should break. That is in theory. After all, there is still a large proportion of users out there that only have 800x600 screens. So everything should scale for me.
No? What do you mean A-List-Apart removes content from my screen? I thought A-list-apart was pushing for web standards. Was pushing for the semantical web. I thought it told people with a "crap" browsers to sod off. If you want to view their site you had to have a version 6 browser. It seems if you now have a "crap" resolution you should also sod off.
Well it looks like there is a new move for everyone to en-force. The 1024px wide sites. No more will you be limited to 800px, no more will you have to ensure everyone can read everything on your site. From now on you design your site in fixed width and anyone with a small screen can go and find themselves a hole to lose themselves down.
Hang on a minute. I have a 1024px wide screen what the hell am i moaning about? I remember. I like to do more than just look at an internet screen. I like to chat at the same time. I am sorry, this action is no longer allowed in the new web. The v1024 web.
It seems I am a little late to pick up this new stupid move. A host of great sites enforce it already. What is really annoying is, sites like 9rules who have a fixed width 20px too wide. It is not like they have to, it is just frustrating.
